How to Establish A Work From Home Routine

Life looks pretty different than it did a few weeks ago. Chances are, your normal routine of going into the office has changed quite a bit. And until everything gets back to normal, we’ve all been challenged to find new norms while working from home. So as we embrace our current circumstances, here are a few tips for creating a work from home routine that works for you!

Wake up early.

On a normal work day, you likely set an early alarm, eat breakfast and get ready (both mentally and physically) for the day ahead. Even though your new commute is only to the living room, keeping a morning routine is incredibly beneficial. Set your alarm at a normal time, get your workspace ready, eat breakfast, grab a cup of coffee and ease into your work day. How you spend your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day, so be thoughtful in your approach.

Keep doing what you typically do.

You’ve worked hard to create healthy rhythms in your life, and you should try to maintain those as much as possible. Whether it’s working out before work or listening to a podcast during your lunch break, continue doing what you’ve been doing as much as possible. When schedules and circumstances change, it’s important to find ways to maintain consistency. You may have to get creative with the way you execute these rhythms, but it will be worth it.

Take advantage of the flexibility.

If you find yourself in a rut in the middle of the day, it’s okay to take a break. You have the flexibility to step away from your computer and clear your mind – so you should! Take a quick walk around the neighborhood for a little Vitamin D or do a clean sweep of the house to feel organized and accomplished. Staying productive while working from home is the goal. And just because you’re working doesn’t mean you’re being productive. So take breaks when you need to. It’s essential for accomplishing your best work!

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Working from home is a new normal for a lot of us, and we’re not going to get it right all the time. When you sleep in too late, miss a workout or your kids delay a conference call with a colleague, give yourself a little grace. Try out different ways of doing things and see what works best for you. If you have a day when you seem to be unproductive or unmotivated, it’s okay. Take a break, get some fresh air and start over again. We’re all learning how to do this together.

Practice gratitude.

We can’t control the circumstances we are in right now, but we can control how we respond to them. Take time each day to think about what you’re grateful for. Write it in a journal, speak it out loud or video call a friend to share – whatever works best for you! Recognizing the good that’s happening around you can change your mindset and attitude. Try it! What do you have to lose?
